Michael Hutchence 20th anniversary: Where the people in his life are now

AAPNews Corp Australia

AS the 20th anniversary of Australian rock star Michael Hutchence’s death approaches, we look back at what happened to the friends, band mates and family members who were closest to him.

PARTNER PAULA YATES

Girlfriend British TV presenter and writer Paula Yates, Hutchence’s grief-stricken partner and mother of his daughter, disputed NSW coroner Derek Hand’s findings that the INXS frontman committed suicide.

Instead, she believed he accidentally strangled himself while indulging in autoerotic asphyxiation.

Yates, 41, died of an accidental heroin overdose at her London home in September 2000.

She left behind her three daughters with ex-husband Bob Geldof, Fifi Trixibelle, Peaches and Pixie, and her daughter with Hutchence, Heavenly Hiraani Tiger Lily.

DAUGHTER TIGER LILY

Tiger Lily (Heavenly Hiraani Tiger Lily Hutchence Geldof) was only one when her father died. As an orphan, she was adopted by Geldof and brought up with her half-sisters in London.

Tiger has remained relatively under the radar, aside from some modelling work in 2016.

She was expected to inherit a large portion of her father’s fortune when she turned 21 this year, however recent documents unearthed in the Paradise Papers indicate she may have missed out on royalties.

PARENTS PATRICIA GLASSOP AND KEL HUTCHENCE

Michael’s mum Patricia Glassop and dad Kel Hutchence both failed in their separate attempts to gain custody of Tiger.

In the late 1990s, Glassop and her daughter Tina Schorr took Hutchence’s lawyer Colin Diamond to court in a battle over her son’s assets which they believed were tied up in trusts. A settlement was reached in 2000.

That same year, Glassop and Tina released a book, Just A Man — The Real Michael Hutchence.

Glassop reportedly battled with Geldof for years to let her see Tiger before she died in 2010. Meanwhile, Kel visited Tiger in London and she saw him in Australia shortly before he died in 2002.

SIBLINGS TINA SCHORR AND RHETT HUTCHENCE

Michael’s half sister Tina Schorr also tried unsuccessfully to gain custody of Tiger after his death while their brother Rhett, a reformed drug addict, wrote an autobiography, Total XS, tracing his childhood up until Hutchence’s death.

HIS BAND INXS

The band has performed one-off concerts with several singers including Jimmy Barnes, Terence Trent D’Arby, and Noiseworks frontman Jon Stevens.

In 2005, JD Fortune became the band’s frontman after winning a reality show called Rock Star: INXS.

Northern Irish singer-songwriter Ciaran Gribbin took over in 2011 until the group announced an end to touring in 2012.

A remastered version of their breakout album Kick has been released to mark its 30th anniversary.

HUTCHENCE’S FORTUNE

While Hutchence’s family were told there was little left in the rock star’s estate, his villa in the south of France, a house in London, properties on the Gold Coast and a development in Indonesia were not included on the executor’s list during various legal battles.

The recent Paradise Papers expose uncovered documents which revealed lawyer Mr Diamond as the beneficiary of Hutchence’s assets through his offshore company, Chardonnay Investments.

With royalties also due from INXS’ 50 million record sales, there is speculation that Tiger Lily is missing out on a fortune.
