Some popular Nigerian reality TV shows are coming back to life after a long hiatus. With the success recorded by the Big Brother Naija over the years, it is apparent that reality shows have a huge market in the country. Sunday Scoop takes a look at some reality TV shows that are returning to television screens

Gulder Ultimate Search

Popularly known as GUS, this reality TV show dominated the airwaves in the early 2000s. Sponsored by Nigerian Breweries, the first edition held in 2004. It is widely regarded as Nigeria’s very first 100 per cent local content reality show, which is based on the model of ‘survival of the fittest’. It follows the struggles of about 30 people, who search for a hidden treasure, which brings the ‘ultimate searcher’ instant fame and wealth.

The last edition of the show held in 2014, and the winner, Chinedu Ubachukwu, took home a N10m cash prize and an SUV.

Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?

This is another reality TV show that is coming back on television after a long break. It first aired on October 8, 2004, and was stopped on June 25, 2017. It is a mentally engaging educational reality television game show which allows contestants three lifelines to aid them in answering tough questions presented to them on the show. Its biggest winner was Chimuanya Aroma Ufodike who bagged 10 million naira on the show in 2009. Before it was rested, it was hosted by Frank Edoho.

Nigerian Idol

This is a music television show which is a local version of the Idols franchise, which was first shot and produced in Stockholm, Sweden.

The show which made its comeback after a six-year hiatus is now in its sixth season. Its first season which was shot and produced in Nigeria premiered in October 2010 and was broadcast live on 15 different channels across Africa.

The first winner of the show was then 26-year-old Onyekachi Onwuka, aka Yeka Onka, and she went home with the sum of N7.5m, a recording contract with Sony Music, a car and an all-expense-paid trip to South Africa.

The winner of the last edition of the show which held earlier this year was Kingdom Kroseide, who walked away with N30m, a brand new SUV, a recording deal, three music videos, an all-expense-paid trip to Seychelles and a weekend getaway to Dubai (United Arab Emirates) for two.

The Voice Nigeria

This singing competition first premiered on April 10, 2016. It then went on a break before making a comeback on Saturday, March 27, 2021.

The show was earlier scheduled for 2020 but didn’t take off as planned due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The winner of the show, Esther Benyeogo, got N10m cash gift, a car, and a record deal with Universal Music Nigeria.

Other rested reality TV shows that many would love to see make a return include MTN Project Fame, Nigeria’s Got Talent, Amstel Malter Box Office, Maltina DanceAll, Nigeria’s Top Model, Next Movie Star, The Next Titan and Knorr Taste Quest.
