As '90s boy bands Five, A1, 911 and Damage prepare for a UK reunion tour, we reveal the VERY different paths they've taken since their chart-topping heyday - from drug addiction to life on a farm

  • Five, 911, Damage and a1 are coming together for a UK comeback tour next year
  • We reveal how life has treated the 90s stars in the decades since their heyday
  • Some have battled drug and alcohol issues while others still work in music

With their wholesome good looks and catchy pop hits, these boy bands defined an era for British girls growing up in the 90s.

Five, 911, Damage and A1 topped the charts and played sell-out concerts to thousands of screaming fans at the height of their fame - but the decades since are a very different story.

While a handful managed to keep up a career in the music industry, others faced years of hardship.

Jimmy Constable of 911 appeared on the Jeremy Kyle show after battling with drink and drug addiction when the band parted ways. Meanwhile Five poster boy Richard 'Abs' Breen, better known as Abz Love, made headlines in 2015 when he tried to sell his BRIT Awards to raise funds to pay for the upkeep of his Welsh farm.

Now the singers are back in the spotlight as they prepare to join forces for a mega boy band reunion tour, Boys Are Back, which will see them play dates across the UK next year.

So before you rush to snap up your tickets, read on to find out how life has treated your favourite teen heartthrobs in the years since they made it big...

Five sold 20 million records in their four years together, and the day after the band officially split in September 2001, Scott, 39, from Essex, tied the knot with girlfriend Kerry Oaker.

Eighteen years - and four children - later, the couple are still very much in love, with Scott regularly sharing gushing posts about his beautiful wife on social media.

In the years after the split Scott landed roles in a handful of reality shows including 2008's Celebrity Scissorhands, where he made it to the final, and ITV2 series The Big Reunion in 2013.

He also appeared in the UK regional theatre musical Boogie Nights 2 from late 2004 through most of 2005.

Scott is an active Instagram user and often shares updates with his 11,800 followers. He recently shared this snap of himself, Ritchie (second from right) and Sean Conlon with Paul Gascoigne (second from left)

One of the three remaining members of the group, Scott took part in both the 2006 and 2012 reunions and is currently touring with Five.

But he's ruled out the band producing new music, saying that fans only want to 'hear the hits'.

And he said that while the band tours as a threesome, he doesn't consider them reunited because of the two missing members.

He said: 'It wouldn’t be down to us to reach out to them. They’ve made it very clear they didn’t want to be in the band.'

Scott is also a passionate Arsenal supporter and enjoys playing football in his spare time. He recently took part in a celebrity charity match alongside X Factor star Jake Quickenden and TV personality Jeff Brazier.

He currently hosts Top of the 90s on Radio Essex.

It has been a journey of highs and lows for Richard Breen, better known as Abz Love, now 40.

Abz's addiction battle

Appearing on Loose Women last year, Abz spoke candidly of his terrifying battle with drugs and alcohol, revealing he even considered suicide.

He explained he went into a spiral after the band split.

'I didn't want to split up, I didn't have any friends or family at the time so I just sort of took it into my own hands,' he said.

'I started hanging around the wrong people, started being influenced by the wrong things, suggestions, and the next thing you know...'

He added: 'It got to the point where – my worst point – where I had this penthouse and I had no money at all.

'I was just bankrupt at the same time they were going to foreclose, take my house, I had no furniture, no cutlery, no anything like that.'

The singer explained he went 'cold turkey' in 2010 and has been sober since.

Last year Abz also appeared on Channel 5 documentary Me And My Addiction.

After Five split, he was signed to Sony BMG by Simon Cowell, and it looked as if he was set to be the only member of the band who might forge a successful career as a solo artist.

His solo album Abstract Theory had three Top 10 hits in the UK Singles Chart, with What You Got hitting the number four spot.

However, the album didn't climb higher that number 29 in the charts, and he was dropped by Sony in December 2003.

After years out of the spotlight, Love returned to screens on ITV2's The Big Reunion in 2013, alongside bandmates Sean Conlon, Ritchie Neville and Sean Robinson.

Just a year later he announced he was leaving the group by posting a brief statement on Twitter, without letting his fellow bandmates know beforehand.

He later revealed in an interview that he did not feel right performing without J Brown.

Abz returned to the spotlight in 2014 when BBC Two commissioned reality TV show Country Strife: Abz on the Farm, which followed Abz and then girlfriend Vicky Fallon as they purchased a dilapidated smallholding and navigated the highs and lows of adjusting to rural life on a budget.

In 2015 Abz made headlines when he listed his BRIT Award on eBay, explaining he needed to raise money to pay for soil and gardening tools for the farm. He received a bid of £1million, however eBay shut down the account over fraud fears.

The singer released a solo single in January 2016, a comedy track Cockadoodledoo, to raise money for his farming projects.

Last month he was announced as part of a line-up for a new boy band super group, alongside Dane Bowers, Shayne Lynch and Ben Ofoedu.

Since Five's break-up in late 2001, Neville, 39, has made occasional appearances as a presenter, guest, actor and reality show contestant.

In 2008 Neville dated and eventually married Australian model and DJ Emily Scott.

They wed in the town of Henley-on-Thames on 23 October 2008 and moved to Sydney, Australia following their wedding.

However they split four months later. Their relationship was only made public after the fact when Scott accused Neville of hitting her with a glass. The case was dismissed and Neville was acquitted.

While in Australia Neville found success as restaurateur in Crows Nest, Sydney, attracting a loyal following of locals and tourists.

In January 2014, it was announced that Ritchie would be taking part in celebrity skiing competition The Jump. He finished in third place.

He currently tours with Scott and Sean as Five and is active on Twitter, where his profile reads: 'Member of Five, actor, photographer. Love family, motorbikes, adventure, and pork crackling.'

Ritchie dated Atomic Kitten singer Natasha Hamilton and the couple welcomed their first child, daughter Ella Rose, in September 2014. They split in March 2016.

After Five disbanded in late 2001, Conlon began been pursuing a solo career as an R&B, jazz and soul singer and pianist in the cafés of London, and was signed to a recording contract.

How many of these Five hits do you remember?

  • Keep on Movin
  • Got the Feelin
  • Slam Dunk (Da Funk)
  • When the Lights Go Out
  • Everybody Get Up
  • If Ya Gettin' Down
  • Rock the Party
  • We Will Rock You (cover of Queen)
  • Let's Dance

It was this that made him decide not to be part of Five's ultimately unsuccessful comeback in 2006.

He became the second group member to sign a solo recording deal with Sony, after Abz, and began work on a new album. However soon after work on the album had begun however, he was dropped by the label.

In March 2012, hoping for another chance of chart success, Conlon auditioned for the first series of The Voice. However he failed to make it past the first round after no coach chose to turn around for him.

Shortly after the reality TV flop Conlon rejoined the group for ITV show The Big Reunion.

Conlon and his wife, who has kept out of the public eye, welcomed their first child in January 2014. He boasts almost 37,000 followers on Twitter.

After the band split, Brown maintained a low-key lifestyle.

In 2000 he was rumoured to be dating Spice Girl Mel C, with the couple attending a premiere of Madonna's film The Next Best Thing in London's West End in June of that year.

In 2007, months after a failed 5ive reunion bid, Brown signed up to take part in the seventh series of I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!

He made it to the final with Christopher Biggins and Janice Dickinson, but finished in third place.

Brown was the only member of the group who did not take part in ITV2 reality series The Big Reunion, saying he no longer wanted to be in the public eye.

Speaking in a 2013 TV interview, Brown told how he had previously battled depression and had once attempted to take his own life.

Now thought to be living in the Welsh Valleys, Brown has also written and produced for other musicians.

Perhaps the most high profile member of the band, Jones remained in the spotlight thanks to his relationship with the Spice Girls' Emma Bunton.

Jade Jones and Emma Bunton are the most high profile boy band-girl band pairing on our list - and the only one still going strong - but several others have come and gone over the years...

The couple met in 1998 but had an on-off relationship - with Bunton being linked to Rio Ferdinand and Justin Timberlake - before settling down in 2004.

The musical pair welcomed their eldest son Beau Lee Jones in August 2007 and son Tate Lee Jones in May 2011.

The couple are now engaged, although Emma has said publicly they only want to marry if the plans can be kept private.

'We want it to be private, every time we try it's out there. We want to do it privately on our own,' she said in an interview earlier this year.

Jones remains a vocal supporter of his wife's career and joined her on the road for several stops of the recent Spice Girls reunion tour.

After Damage split, Jones formed CherryBlackStone with band member Andrez Harriott, but the pair lasted only a few months.

In 2006, he participated in and went on to win the Channel 4 reality show The Games.

Following Beau's birth, Jones retrained as a chef and reportedly worked at Claridge's.

Andrez Harriott continued his musical career after Damage by forming CherryBlackStone, a four piece group with their name taken from the American rock band Black Stone Cherry.

The group, which also included Jones and Harriott's wife ReDD, performed at several London venues, Female First reported

Since 2005, Andrez has dedicated his life to working with young people and young adults from disadvantaged backgrounds or those at risk of offending.

Andrez founded The Liminality Group in 2011 in order to work with young people and young adults, often during the difficult times within their lives, with the aim of developing their potential for a better future.

One of the founding members of the band, Bromfield established Damage with Noel Simpson while at the Barbara Speake Stage School in Acton, west London.

In early 2014, Bromfield returned to the stage when Damage reformed as a quartet without Richards for the second series of the ITV2 documentary The Big Reunion along with other bands.

He currently tours with Harriott, Jones and Simpson as a four-piece version of Damage.

Alongside music, Bromfield has built up a photography career specialising in weddings and portraiture.

Unsurprisingly, his fellow band members have supported Bromfield by posing for photos.

Their shots appear under the heading 'celebrities' on his company website, Rahsaan Jas Photography.

Bromfield keeps his personal Instagram account private but is active on Twitter.

He is married and is a father. It is thought he has at least one son and one daughter.

Richards was the fifth member recruited for the band after the other four heard him singing at a bus stop. However he was first to leave - announcing his departure in August 2001 after the release of singles Still Be Lovin' You and So What If I from the band's second album, Since You've Been Gone.

The remaining four members released a further single, After the Love Has Gone, and later announced their split in December 2001.

Speaking in 2014, Simpson, Jones, Bromfield and Harriott told The Sun that they blamed Richards leaving for the band's collapse. Richards released a solo track on iTunes in 2015.

The musician has declined to rejoin the band for any reunion tours and will not join them on the road next year.

Jimmy Constable, now 47, had arguably the most difficult road in the wake of his boy band success, facing a battle with alcoholism and drug use that eventually led to an appearance on the Jeremy Kyle show in 2013.

Originally a trained dancer, Constable turned to drink towards the end of the band's time together. On one occasion he appeared on SMTV Live while intoxicated.

I found myself in my old single bed with a bottle of Jack Daniel's and a bottle of pain killers and thought about ending it there and then. The only thing that stopped me was thinking about the devastation it would cause for my family
Jimmy Constable

Once the band had decided to split, Constable was tasked with announcing the news in a live radio interview on the Chris Moyles Show on Radio 1 in 2000.

Speaking in an interview with the Guardian in 2005, Constable revealed the impact it had on him. 'I didn't have any time to get my head around it,' he said. 'I had a lump in my throat saying it, then we came out of Radio 1 and the other two guys went to the pub. I got in my car and took off and I never saw them for two years.'

After the band split, Constable turned to drink and drugs, admitting in an interview with the Daily Star: 'I found myself in my old single bed with a bottle of Jack Daniel's and a bottle of pain killers and thought about ending it there and then.

'The only thing that stopped me was thinking about the devastation it would cause for my family.'

Youth leader: Spike Dawbarn, left in 1996 and right in 2014, has spoken about how the band decided to quit at the top of their game. He later founded a music programme for children.

Dawbarn, now 45, continues to make a living gigging with members of 911 and joined Brennan and Constable on their tour of Asia this summer.

After the band split Dawbarn established youth performing arts programme PopSkool in his hometown of Warrington, Cheshire. It reportedly opened other branches across the UK.

Speaking on The Big Reunion in 2014, Dawbarn said he believed the band had made the right decision in quitting the industry when they did.

He said: 'We knew we'd reached our peak and we were kind of that little decline and we thought, 'It's best getting out at the top.'

The singer has a one-year-old son, Teddy, with long-term partner Nicola Edmonds, and an older son named Phoenix.

He joined Dawbarn and Constable on a 911 tour of Asia, where they maintain a devoted following.

Brennan, who describes himself as a '90’s Boybander Singer/Actor', is also a passionate philanthropist.

A cancer survivor himself - Brennan was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma twice in childhood - the singer established the annual Shine A Light Ball to raise funds for cancer charities.

The musician regularly posts on Instagram, where he boasts more than 10,600 followers.

Another boy band star who fell in love with a girl band member, Brennan was with B*Witched's Lindsay Armaou for 13 years.

The couple met in 1998 - when B*Witched supported 911 on tour - and married in 2006. The couple parted ways in 2011.

Lee briefly dabbled in photography, launching LB Photography, although this appears to have folded.

While Marazzi has now rejoined A1 it was a rocky road to the reunion for the 44-year-old.

The singer, who was the founding member of the band, was the first to leave, announcing in October 2002 that he was taking a break from A1 for personal reasons. The band split shortly afterwards.

Chart success for A1

The band achieved two No. 1s in 2000 with their songs Same Old Brand New You and Take On Me, a cover of the original by Norwegian band A-ha.

Their debut single Be the First to Believe reached number 6 in the UK.

They scored five other top 10 hits.

They achieved chart success across the world in the late 1990s and early 2000s, particularly in South East Asia, where they still boast a massive fan base.

The musician continued to forge a career in the music industry, establishing a band called Snagsby and later gigging with a wedding band called Hip Operations.

Unlike fellow boyband alum Jason Brown, Marazzi turned down an opporunity to appear on I'm a Celebrity... Get Me out of Here! when he was approached for the 2004 series.

He also declined to join the three other members of A1 for a reunion show in Norway in August 2009, and for The Big Reunion in 2013.

Marazzi, who is a father at two, also spent some time working as a cabinet maker.

In May last year it was announced that Marazzi would rejoin the band for a series of concerts in south east Asia in October last year.

The band are now preparing for their first live UK show with the original line-up in 15 years. It will be held at O2 Academy Islington, London on 1 November.
