The show features the Bates mega-family of Rocky Top, which includes Gil and Kelly Jo Bates, their 19 children, five sons and daughters in law and six grandchildren. It airs at 9 p.m. Thursdays on the Up Network.

Chad and Erin (Bates) Paine took on a fixer upper in Knoxville, and Zach and Whitney Bates remodeled their newly purchased home during the show.

Chad and Erin work on Knoxville home

After leaving his job at Noble Metals in Oak Ridge, Chad has started his own construction company. One of his projects involved working with Roy Anderson of Anderson Builders, who's a longtime friend of the Bates family, to flip a Knoxville fixer upper.

"In working at Noble Metals, I kind of put a lot of my skill sets on hold just with construction and remodel," said Chad. "And so with this new venture, I'm really hoping, I'm kind of dreaming that Erin and I can work together on one day flipping houses together."

Chad and Erin visited the home at the start of the project, and Erin gave insight the home's interior design. She said it was too dark inside but had potential.

After visiting the home, Whitney Bates, who's a real estate agent, said the home featured a good location in Knoxville.

"This is a really sought after neighborhood, and you're right in the heart of Knoxville with all kinds of shopping and just in this neighborhood, the comps (comparable sales) can run anywhere from $380,000 to $420,000 so I mean I think he's (Anderson) picked a really great location, beautiful house, and I think he's made a good choice," said Whitney.

The episode provided glimpses of the renovation process during the first week, at six weeks and then at 12 weeks.

The renovations opened the home up and brightened it. The house also received new floors, paint and appliances.

"I couldn't be happier for Roy," said Chad. "I think he's going to have a great return on his investment. I mean all in for the lot and the foundation and what was left of the house. I mean it's $60,000. With the improvements and all that, I think he listed around $399,000, and I know he's already got interest. I would absolutely love to be able to do more projects like this, and I'm excited about that opportunity in the future."

Zach and Whitney remodel their home

While Chad and Erin worked on their project, Zach and Whitney Bates purchased their first home at M&M Title Company Inc. in Clinton.

"We found this place. As soon as I walked up and looked at it, I just knew that this is really a good deal for us," said Zach. "It needed a lot of work, so that's going to make it be a lot less on the front end for price."

Zach and Whitney visited their new home and talked about potential renovations including taking some walls out, adding new floors and panting the walls. Their budget was $15,000, and their goal was to complete the project in six weeks. They visited Knox Rail Salvage in Knoxville to get materials.

Some of the Bates family members came to help Zach and Whitney with their renovations.

"Honestly for me, this process has been a blast," said Whitney. "I've packed up the kids. We come over here and sit with Zach, and I just started pitching in, and he gave me the nail gun and showed me what to do, and you know, once you get in there, you feel like 'This is our house ... we are getting down together and working on it."

They moved into their home eight weeks after starting their project.

Will the Bates family remodel houses?

After the completion of the projects, both Zach and Chad hinted at the possibility of working together as a family to remodel homes for other people.

"Being able to come in and see what a difference that this made for our living space, I'd love to get to work some with Chad, work some with the rest of them, and just help other people out, help them make their home something usable and functional," said Zach.

"As the family grows, also the talents, the abilities and different things that come to the table also grow. Erin's ability to design and me in construction and then Zach with framing and Whitney in real estate, I like to think of maybe what might happen in the future or just around the corner," said Chad.
