'They called me a serial killer': The Bachelorette's Ryan Jones reveals he received vile abuse after the show... and claims producers manipulated footage of him licking his lips to portray him as a 'villain'

He was portrayed as the 'villain' of Sophie Monk's series of The Bachelorette last year, who ruffled feathers with his confidence.

And Ryan Jones has now claimed producers manipulated footage of him throughout the show, including using one scene of him licking his lips to portray him as a 'creep'.

The New Zealand-born construction manager, 27, added that he received vile abuse after leaving the Channel 10 dating program and was branded a 'serial killer' by trolls.

Ryan discussed the downside of appearing on The Bachelorette in an episode of the ABC's You Can't Ask That.

On the show, which shows misunderstood or marginalised Australians answering questions about their lives, he explained that his flatmate urged him to try out for The Bachelorette.

'My flatmate said, 'You have to go on the show'. I said, 'No trust me. I know what type of people go on that show, I'm doing fine with the ladies'.

'Then I thought, 'You know what, I need some excitement in my life'.'

He then claimed he had felt completely at ease with the producers of the dating show at the time, but learned in hindsight that they could portray him 'however they want'.

'The producers made me feel comfortable and trusting. How naive of me to think somebody had my best interests at heart.

'They get so much footage that they can do whatever they want and portray you however they want.'

Ryan claimed he licked his lips at one point during the first episode where all the contestants met Sophie - but producers reportedly replayed it again and again.

'You've got to remember, we'd been drinking beers all day, we were very dehydrated and I licked my lips because I was so dehydrated,' he said.

'They accentuated that [footage of him licking his lips] every chance they got, throughout that first episode.'

Daily Mail Australia has contacted a Channel 10 representative for comment.

Discussing the backlash afterwards, he said: 'They could have given us the common courtesy of saying, 'You know what, you're going to get smashed by the media and everyone's going to hate you'.

'It was hate, hate, hate, hate. 'The most punchable face, this guy's a creep, this guy's a serial killer'. I was the villain. No-one wants anything to do with the villain. It's lonely.'

Ryan, who now lives in Sydney's Coogee, recalled how his father urged him to come home to get away from the trolling.

'My old man called me and said, 'Come to New Zealand and get away from it all, leave your phone at home',' he said.

'I drove to where I grew up and went into a local pub and went out on the p**s all night with these guys there.

'I didn't know these guys and they didn't know me and it was quite refreshing. I was like, 'this is what life is all about'.'

Ryan, who has been dating a woman called Tahlia Rozis since the start of this year, was adamant that he wouldn't try another reality show.

'No. I did it. I tried it. I've got better things to do with my life now,' he said.
