MUSKEGON, MI - A swarm of people dressed in their gothic best will be making their way to Michigan’s Adventure next month.

The Darkness Underground, an Illinois-based gothic event group, is inviting people to participate in the inaugural Gothic Invasion at Michigan’s largest amusement park on Sunday, June 30.

Organizer Aaron Bennett said the event is family-friendly and aims to be a welcoming space for goths to meet up, whether you’re a classic ‘80s emo or a metalhead.

“Being a music-focused subgenre, many people are interested in the goth subculture, but can’t go to the club, so this is a way to incorporate a family-friendly event,” Bennett said. “The subculture has lasted for 50 years at this point, so the event is to keep it going with the young people coming in.”

Starting at noon, people can meet up with friends or chat with gothics from across generations before a group carousel ride at 1 p.m., immediately followed by a group picture by the entrance. There will also be another chance for a group photo by the carousel at 6 p.m.

The Facebook event page has become popular, with over 3,000 people interested and hundreds of people already set to attend. Some are even coming from out of state, Bennett said.

He told that he was inspired to host the event at Michigan’s Adventure after the annual Gothic Takeover event at Colorado’s Lakeside Amusement Park, which features live music, games, fun-filled activities, and more.

“I reached out to Michigan’s Adventure and they thought it was a cool idea, welcomed us and asked if there’s anything they could do,” he said. “It’s a place for people to get to know each other outside the club when the lights are usually dim. Regardless of how many people come, it should be fun.”

No special ticket is required to attend. It only costs $2 extra per ticket and parking if not purchased online. The daily $39.99 admission also includes WildWater Adventure Waterpark.
